Seniors

Working on behalf of our seniors is a top priority for Councilmember White. Councilmember White has introduced the following measures below:

  • Managing Outdoor Work for Seniors Amendment Act of 2017 - this bill establishes a program and supporting fund in the Office on Aging, the Managing Outdoor Work for Seniors program (MOWS), and MOWS fund, respectively. The program shall provide gardening services for seniors.
  • Senior Citizen Tax Relief Amendment Act of 2017 - this bill provides tax relief for District seniors by providing an exemption from real property taxes to those who have owed a residence in the District for at least 20 years, are 70 years old or older, have an annual adjusted gross income of less than $60,000 and less than $12,500 in household interest and dividend income. Among other things, it restores the deduction for long-term care insurance as well as the income tax exclusion for pensions or military retired pay.
  • Age-In-Place and Equitable Senior Citizen Real Property Amendment Act of 2017 - this bill expands eligibility for reduced tax liability for disabled property owners over age 65 by increasing the income eligibility from a household adjusted gross income of $125,000 to $150,000.
